For goodness sake, can we chill out with putting every aspect of our lives on hold til the first week of January? I have seen some buzz this year, at least around health issues, regarding throwing NY resolutions down the toilet, but I also don't think we should just keep living as we do after the year turns.
I mean, this is not only a new month and a new year, it's also a new decade! Tons of people excited about what #2020vision has to bring, as am I! But I have been around long enough (as a coach and as a person who made the long yearly list myself) to know that by the third week in January, most diets, fitness regimens and business goals feel overwhelming. Most just stop. There is actually a day called Blue Monday where depression sets in! The weather for most areas is cold and gray, plus by the third week in January most have given up the new routines. What's left is a sense of failure.
So how can we avoid all of these this year?
This is a goal-setting approach comprised of these 5 characteristics used in many behavioral change programs, including health and wellness coaching. Why? Because it works. I don't have my clients write down grandiose goals that don't have mini steps along the way. This way, you take it step by step instead of just saying "lost 50 pounds and write a book"...ok, but how will you start? What actions will you take? Do you have the time and expenses to do so? SMART goals really make you think about what you are committing to so that when you do - they are ACHIEVED instead of just left behind. HUGE success rate!
Example of a SMART goal:
"Lose 2 inches of body fat by eating whole foods only within 30 days."
We know exactly what this person wants, when they want to do it by and how they are going to.
