Are you making a conscious effort to be happy? The more I study about mental wellness, the more I learn, we really need to work at it!

In taking a recent board certification course on in-depth coaching, I learned about Seligman’s theoretical model of happiness (PERMA) which helps us understand the elements of happiness and what we can do to maximize each element to reach a life full of it!

"The PERMA model was designed by Martin Seligman, founder of positive psychology, with five core element of psychological well-being and happiness. Seligman believes that these five elements can help people reach a life of fulfillment, happiness, and meaning. This model can also be applied to institutions to develop programs to help people develop new cognitive and emotional tools."

The 5 PERMA keys to well-being:

P = Positive Emotions Negative emotions are heavy, and happiness is about creating a balance, with plenty of positive emotions for when those negative ones start to weigh on you. How can you elevate the positive emotions in your daily life?

E = Engagement It’s incredibly rewarding to be so deeply immersed in what you’re doing that you enter a state of flow, of focus and engagement. That feeling comes from using your character strengths, and it’s an essential part of a life well-lived. How can you spend more time on the things that truly engage you?

R = Relationships AKA, the fast-track to happiness. If the world’s happiest people have one thing in common, it’s that they invest in creating rich, satisfying relationships with others. What makes your most rewarding relationships so powerful?

M = Meaning Having a sense of purpose, of what gives our lives meaning, gives us something to bounce back to when life’s inevitable challenges come up. What is your purpose? What gets you up in the morning?

A = Achievement The final ingredient in well-being, achievement is all about setting goals and working to achieve them. That powerful feeling of progress and accomplishment is a key to happiness. What steps can you take today to get closer to one of your goals?
