Bacteria Brain

Ok, so this is not a photo of a human brain, but look how gorgeous it is?! I had to use. Our brains are a gross shade of taupe and not eye candy at all. These microscopic under the sea organisms are.

I'm not sure you have seen the array of nutrition articles out this month on Reddit, Facebook, etc. regarding how gut bacteria is now being linked with mood disorders and more. Well, the people in my industry are like, duh...but I see why it's a novel idea that is just catching on.

What does this "newfound" link mean to us as the human race? A lot. Especially since we are only 10% human cells. The rest of our God bods are made out of bacteria. Wowsers.

Wild, right? Now, let's take a look at what the vagus nerve, or gut brain axis, really has to do with our mental health. WHY is this idea of a second brain hitting mainstream?

In the book "The Mind-Gut Connection", Dr. Mayer explains that our digestive system and our brain are closely linked through bidirectional signaling pathways that include nerves, hormones and inflammatory molecules. "Rich sensory information generated in the gut reaches the brain (gut sensations) and the brain sends signals back to the gut to adjust its function (gut reaction). The close interaction of these pathways play a crucial role in the generation of emotional and optimal gut function. The two are intricately linked."

Of course this makes sense when we think about "gut feelings" or how when someone has anxiety it also often leads to diarrhea. The hopeful news is now that we understand this connection (pointed out by the father of medicine in 400BC, btw) we can help optimize the gut through proper nutrition and supplements specific to help stimulate the vagus nerve, including ancient herbs and plants from India and China. We can also include daily practices to help lower stress that is effecting our bodies physically, because our mind is a powerful thing.
