One of my favorite things to learn about in school and beyond was anything having to do with medicinal mushrooms. I loved their texture and flavor for as long as I can remember, but once I realized how much they do for our body, I was their #1 fan.
AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) was developed in 1987 at the University of Tokyo. It is a standardized extract of cultured mycelia (shiitake) mushroom. The functional ingredient is rich in alpha-glucans which means it is a key immune system primer/enhancer!
Dr. Michelle Carrillo-Massa, a functional medicine physician in Palm Beach County FL, went to Japan over the summer of 2018 to research how this extract was being used in a new product for a line of nutraceuticals. Here is a first-hand look at how it works.
AHCC is ingested, the body looks at it as a foreigner which stimulates several key immune receptors causing our immune activated signaling pathway to function. Because of this, the cytokines (substances that are secreted by certain cells of the immune system) and immune cells are enhanced! BETTER IMMUNITY!
Who needs this? Sounds like we all do!
• Health Maintenance
• Prevention of wide range of infections
• Vaccine adjuvant function
There is also a lot of research being done with AHCC in Integrative Oncology:
• Longer postoperative survival
• Chemotherapy Support (synergistic effect)
• Chemotherapy Side Effects Reduction
• Side Effect Reduction in Radiation Therapy
• Improvement in Quality of Life
There is also promise in clinical trials regarding Human papillomavirus:
• AHCC in eradication of HPV
• AHCC may improve survival time in patients with early stage of gastric and colon cancer
WHOA! Yes, please! How do I get my daily shot? With a seed fiber in my smoothie (link below) and also adding in as many mushrooms as I can to meals!
